Preventing and Managing Occupational Violence and Aggression in Health Care Settings

Overview

This course has been developed with content experts from Grampians health and has been designed for health service staff who are increasingly being confronted with incidents of occupational violence and aggression.

Occupational violence and aggression not only affects the health and wellbeing of health service staff but also has significant workforce and financial implications for the health care industry. For all of these reasons, staff need to know how to prevent, reduce and manage incidents of violence and aggression in the workplace.

Preventing and Managing Occupational Violence and Aggression in Health Care Settings

Learning Outcomes
  • Define occupational violence and aggression
  • Recall the various classifications of occupational violence and aggression
  • Identify the relevant legislation and standards that clarify employers’ responsibilities in preventing and managing violence and aggression in the workplace
  • Identify some of the factors that predispose and trigger violent and aggressive behaviours in clients and visitors
  • Recall and apply basic principles about preventing and managing occupational violence and aggression incidents, and
  • Identify the role of health service staff in post-incident debriefing and review.
Course Content

The course will begin by covering the following areas:

  • Key definitions used in occupational violence and aggression (OV&A) literature
  • Types of OV&A
  • Laws governing the management of risks associated with OV&A
  • Australian standards related to OV&A, and
  • Employer and employee responsibilities in regard to preventing and managing OV&A.

The course will then cover specific strategies for dealing with incidents of OV&A, including:

  • Being prepared for incidents
  • Identifying that an incident is occurring
  • Evaluating the incident and taking appropriate action, and
  • Post-incident review and debriefing.
